The notion of a reprieve not only circumscribes the playing field shared by illusion and hope, but also recalls a fundamental figure in the historical thinking of the Sunwest. For the explicitly occidental meaning of the word history can only be understood in terms of this temporal and intermediate character. Intermediate time can only occur where an event in time is directed towards a final goal or a finite deadline, from which it can be seen as a respite. It is precisely these fundamental features of late Jewish and Christian historical thought that have given rise to the phenomenon called Europe. Few historians take the trouble to take account of this, even though not only early Western history but also modern history, including our own, has followed a tradition and variations on messianic and eschatological patterns. However, as for the open programme of critique of historical reason since Marx and Dilthey, there can be no doubt that its core is messianology - as it originated in the Jewish tradition and shaped history in its Christian version.
